Amarnath Ghosh, a 34-year-old male of Indian descent, was an accomplished classical dancer and a graduate student pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Known for his expertise in Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam dance styles, he had moved to the United States to further his artistic education and was nearing the completion of his degree.
On the evening of February 27, 2024, his promising journey was cut short when he went for a jog in the Academy neighborhood near the border of the Central West End. He was traveling along Delmar Boulevard, a routine activity for the student who was deeply integrated into the local dance community, when he was targeted in an act of violence that would shock both his local peers and his family abroad.
The incident unfolded as Ghosh was running near the intersection of Delmar and Clarendon. According to investigators, surveillance footage captured a vehicle stopping near him. Gunfire erupted, striking him multiple times and leaving him fatally wounded on the sidewalk. While reports initially varied regarding the exact timeline of the discovery, police responded to the scene where Ghosh had succumbed to his injuries. The brutality of the shooting sparked immediate concern among the student body and the international community, particularly as Ghosh’s family resided in West Bengal and faced significant challenges in obtaining information and claiming his remains from overseas.
Homicide detectives with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation that eventually led to a breakthrough in March 2024. Authorities identified a suspect, 46-year-old Glenn Bailey, after linking his vehicle to the crime scene through surveillance video. The footage reportedly showed Bailey’s car trailing Ghosh shortly before the shooting occurred. Upon questioning, Bailey allegedly confessed to being present at the scene and admitted to selling drugs in the area, though court documents suggested the involvement of a second individual who has not been publicly identified or charged with the same prominence as of the initial reports. Bailey was arrested and formally charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, providing a step toward justice for the slaying of the celebrated artist.
