In the quiet community of Independence, Missouri, a routine civil action spiraled into a tragedy that claimed the life of Police Officer Cody Ray Allen. A 35-year-old male, Allen was a respected member of the Independence Police Department. His life was cut short on Thursday, February 29, 2024, when he responded to a call for assistance from a Jackson County Circuit Court employee.
The incident unfolded when civil process server Drexel Mack was attempting to serve an eviction notice at a
residence in northeastern Independence. A person inside the home reportedly opened fire, striking and wounding Mack. When officers, including Cody Ray Allen, arrived at the scene to render aid and secure the area, they were met with gunfire. In the exchange, Officer Allen was fatally wounded. Drexel Mack also succumbed to his injuries. Two other police officers sustained non-fatal gunshot wounds during the confrontation.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a male suspect was taken into custody by law enforcement. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Officer Cody Ray Allen and Drexel Mack. The suspect was also reported to have sustained minor injuries during the incident and was transported to a hospital.
