In the late hours of a Saturday night in St. Louis, a gathering of around 200 young people in a parking lot in the Midtown neighborhood turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 19-year-old Eddie Randle Jr. The incident, which unfolded around midnight on May 18, 2024, in the 3000 block of Olive Street, also left three other individuals wounded.
Gunshots erupted from a car, tearing through the crowd and leaving a tragic aftermath.
Randle, a resident of the Hamilton Heights neighborhood, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another 19-year-old man was transported to a local hospital and was listed in stable condition. An 18-year-old woman sustained what was described as a graze wound and declined medical treatment at the scene. A fourth victim, a woman whose age was not released, received treatment for a minor gunshot wound but left the hospital before police could interview her.
In the wake of the shooting, a homicide investigation was launched by the St. Louis police. This investigation led to the arrests of two brothers, 27-year-old Jordan Huddlen and 31-year-old Kevin Huddlen. In July 2024, charges were filed against both men. Jordan Huddlen is facing a slate of nine charges, including first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, tampering with physical evidence, and four counts of armed criminal action.
Kevin Huddlen was arrested on June 5 and has been charged with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm, one count of tampering with evidence, and four counts of hindering prosecution. Preliminary court hearings for both men were scheduled for August 2024 as the legal proceedings in the case against them began. The shooting has been highlighted as a troubling example of teen violence as the city entered the summer months.
