In a tragic turn of events on May 19, 2024, a domestic dispute in Mexico, Missouri, culminated in the death of 36-year-old Christopher S. Welch, a Caucasian male. The incident unfolded at a residence on East Promenade Street, where an altercation involving several individuals took a fatal turn.
Responding to a call at approximately 6:17 p.m., officers from the Mexico Public Safety Department discovered that Christopher S. Welch had been shot and killed.
The investigation quickly identified his brother, 30-year-old Stephen L. Welch, as the suspected shooter. Stephen remained at the scene and was taken into custody.
The subsequent investigation revealed conflicting accounts of the moments leading up to the shooting. One witness alleged that Christopher Welch was holding a knife and had threatened to kill his brother, Stephen, and another individual present at the scene. According to this account, Christopher advanced toward Stephen while making threats. Stephen Welch reportedly told law enforcement that he fired his weapon until it was empty, stating that his Marine training had taught him to shoot in that manner. He claimed to have been about seven feet away from his brother during the confrontation.
Initially, Stephen Welch was arrested and held at the Audrain County Jail. However, the Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney's Office released him pending further investigation, a decision made to allow for a more thorough gathering of evidence. On June 28, 2024, after reviewing the completed investigation, the prosecutor's office filed formal charges against Stephen L. Welch. The charges include second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. Following the filing of these charges, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
