On an August evening in 2020, a young man named Tornez Burton, a male resident of Mexico, Missouri, lost his life in a burst of gunfire at Garfield Park. What was intended to be a fistfight between two groups of people escalated into a fatal encounter. Burton had arrived at the park with Javon Hornbeak, where they were met by Jzyeshawn Palmer and Davayjion Blackwell, who intended to fight.
The situation took a tragic turn when Palmer swung at Burton.
In that moment, Hornbeak pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots into the crowd. One of the bullets struck Burton in the back, inflicting a fatal wound. The gunfire also injured Palmer and Blackwell, both of whom were struck in the leg. While Palmer was transported to a hospital for his injuries, Blackwell left the scene to seek his own medical attention. Tornez Burton died at the park.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of Javon Hornbeak. He was subsequently charged with murder in the second degree, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action. In April 2022, Hornbeak entered a guilty plea to these charges.
Following his guilty plea, Javon Hornbeak, who was 20 years old at the time of sentencing, was sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison for his role in the death of Tornez Burton and the injuries sustained by the other two young men. During the sentencing, family members of Burton spoke about their loss and the devastating impact of gun violence on their community. The prosecution emphasized that Hornbeak's decision to introduce a firearm into a fistfight was the sole reason for the deadly escalation of events.
