In the early morning hours of June 27, 2020, a violent home invasion shattered the peace of a residence in the 800 block of West Street in Mexico, Missouri. Intruders forcibly entered the home where 25-year-old Chance Davis lived with his family. During the break-in, the assailants fired a single shot, striking the male victim. The fatal act was committed in the presence of his significant other and his young son, leaving the family to call 911 at approximately 4:41 a.m.
Despite the immediate response from emergency services, the young father succumbed to his injuries, launching a homicide investigation that would span several years.
Local authorities, including Mexico Public Safety and the Mid-Missouri Major Case Squad, launched an extensive inquiry into the murder. The investigation eventually identified three suspects believed to be responsible for the coordinated attack: Sadiq Moore, Deyton Curtis Fisher, and Timothy Scott Midgyett. Prosecutors alleged that Moore and Midgyett were the ones who entered the home during the incident. The case required cooperation between local county prosecutors and the Missouri Attorney General's Office to bring the accused men to justice.
The legal proceedings resulted in convictions for all three men involved. Sadiq Moore faced a jury trial in Randolph County after a change of venue. In April 2022, jurors deliberated for nearly four hours before finding him guilty of second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action. He was subsequently sentenced to 30 years in prison. Deyton Curtis Fisher, who was 26 at the time of his sentencing in August 2023, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree burglary. He received two 15-year sentences to be served concurrently.
Timothy Scott Midgyett, the final defendant to be sentenced, entered a guilty plea in October 2024. He admitted to charges of second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon resulting in death, and first-degree burglary, receiving 15-year sentences for each. Additionally, he received a consecutive 10-year sentence for armed criminal action, bringing his total prison term to 25 years. The conclusion of these cases marked the end of a long legal chapter for the community and the grieving family, who had waited over four years for the final judgment to be rendered.
