On June 5, 2024, at approximately 12:50 p.m., Independence police responded to reports of a shooting near Sundown Drive and Claremont Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 20-year-old Donnie M. Kirkland Jr. lying in the middle of the road with a gunshot wound to his chest. Kirkland, a resident of Independence, was conscious but unable to identify his assailant. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that day.
