On the afternoon of June 5, 2024, Independence police were dispatched to the Sugar Creek Apartments near Sundown Drive and Claremont Avenue following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered 20-year-old Donnie M. Kirkland, a male resident of Independence, conscious but suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was found in the parking lot where the incident occurred. Kirkland was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
