On the early morning of August 31, 2024, a fatal shooting incident occurred in the Bellefontaine Neighbors area of St. Louis County, Missouri, claiming the life of 16-year-old male Karmel Graham. Graham, a resident of the 4600 block of Enright Avenue in St. Louis, was out with a group of friends around 2:45 a.m. in the 1100 block of Oran Drive. According to investigators, the teenager and an unidentified third person were in the neighborhood reportedly 'checking vehicles' when the situation
turned deadly.
As the group was in the area, a resident of the street, 46-year-old Michael Tolden, emerged from his home and confronted them. A juvenile witness later told authorities that upon seeing Tolden brandish a firearm, they attempted to flee back into their vehicle. Tolden allegedly fired multiple shots into the car as they tried to escape. Graham, who was seated in the driver's seat, was struck by the gunfire and was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.
Law enforcement officers from the St. Louis County Police Department responded to the shooting and launched a homicide investigation. Michael Tolden was identified as the primary suspect and was taken into custody later that same Saturday. Police reported that during questioning, Tolden confessed to the shooting. He was subsequently charged by the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. Following his arrest, Tolden was held on a cash-only bond set at $1 million.
