In the late afternoon of October 3, 2023, chaos erupted near the intersection of Broadway and Rosa Parks Boulevard in Paterson, New Jersey, when gunfire shattered the day. When the shots ceased, 23-year-old Jerrell Wright, a male from the nearby town of Riverdale, was found inside a vehicle, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds to his chest. He was rushed to St. Joseph's University Medical Center but was pronounced deceased.
Two other individuals were also struck by the gunfire; a 19-year-old man from Elmwood Park who was in the same vehicle as Wright, and a 57-year-old man who was on a nearby bus. Both of these men survived their injuries.
The investigation into the shooting, a joint effort by the Paterson Police Department and the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office, quickly began to unravel the events of that violent afternoon. Within days, their work led them to their first suspect, a 16-year-old male from Paterson. On October 12, 2023, the teenager was taken into custody without incident by a team that included members of the Paterson Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, and the New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit. Due to his age, his name was not publicly released. He was charged with acts of juvenile delinquency that, if he were an adult, would constitute murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and weapons offenses.
The investigation did not end with the teenager's arrest, as authorities continued to seek others involved in the fatal shooting. Their persistence paid off months later. On June 8, 2024, a second suspect, 19-year-old Brayan Caraballo of Paterson, was located and arrested in Pennsylvania. Caraballo faced a string of serious charges, including first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted murder, in connection with the incident that claimed Jerrell Wright's life and injured two others. Following his capture, he awaited extradition back to New Jersey to face the charges. The investigation was said to be active and ongoing even after the second arrest.
