In the late afternoon hours of a Friday in Paterson, New Jersey, the life of 31-year-old Antonio Johnson was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. On November 18, 2016, Johnson was driving his red Cadillac near the intersection of Godwin Avenue and Rosa Parks Boulevard when he was fatally shot. The car, after the shooting, crashed into a parked vehicle, bringing a sudden and violent halt to the day's activities in the neighborhood. First responders rushed to the scene, and Johnson was transported to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting revealed another victim, 26-year-old Otis Johnson, who was not related to Antonio. He had also suffered several gunshot wounds in the same incident and had arrived at the hospital's emergency room separately. He was listed in critical but stable condition.
Detectives from the Paterson Police Department and the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office immediately began an intensive investigation, piecing together the events that led to the deadly encounter. Their efforts were focused on bringing a suspect to justice for the brazen daylight shooting that had claimed one life and seriously injured another.
Less than two months after the fatal shooting, authorities announced a significant breakthrough in the case. On January 10, 2017, a collaborative effort between Paterson police detectives, the U.S. Marshals Service, and state parole officers led to the apprehension of a suspect. Domenick Deavereux, a 30-year-old resident of Paterson, was taken into custody in the vicinity of Franklin and Summer streets. He was subsequently charged with murder and weapons offenses in connection with the death of Antonio Johnson. The arrest brought a measure of resolution to the family of the victim and the community, as the man believed to be responsible was now in custody and would face the judicial process.
