In the early morning hours of November 10, 2023, the life of 33-year-old Delvis Jamal Vasquez, a Hispanic male from Paterson, New Jersey, was tragically cut short. In the area of Park Avenue and Straight Street in his lifelong hometown, Vasquez was shot. Paterson Police Department officers were dispatched to the scene around 12:44 a.m. following a report of the shooting. Upon arrival, they found Vasquez with a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to St.
Joseph's University Medical Center for treatment, but he was ultimately pronounced deceased.
For nearly two years, the investigation into the death of Delvis Vasquez continued. The case saw a significant breakthrough when detectives were able to identify a suspect. The man believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting was identified as Joshua Perez, a 38-year-old resident of Paterson. However, by the time he was identified, Perez had left the state of New Jersey.
Investigators tracked Joshua Perez to Florida, where he was located and taken into custody. On September 2, 2025, he was extradited back to New Jersey to face charges for his alleged role in the death of Delvis Vasquez. Perez has been charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office has filed a motion for his pretrial detention as he awaits legal proceedings.
