On a Tuesday afternoon in Clifton, New Jersey, Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik, a man who had dedicated over four decades of his life to law enforcement, ended his own life. The incident occurred on January 23, 2024, inside the restroom of Toros, a local Turkish restaurant on Hazel Street. Berdnik was having a late lunch when he excused himself to go to the bathroom. Shortly thereafter, witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot. Authorities who responded to the scene found the sheriff deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The news of Berdnik's sudden death sent shockwaves through the community and the law enforcement fraternity, where he was a well-respected figure. A Clifton native, Berdnik had served as the 49th Sheriff of Passaic County since 2011, having been re-elected for his fifth term in November 2022. Before his tenure as sheriff, he had a distinguished 28-year career with the Clifton Police Department.
He was known as a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly to combat criminal activity and modernize the sheriff's office. His death left behind his wife of 38 years, Monica, and their four adult children.
While no definitive reason for his actions was immediately released, Berdnik’s death came during a challenging period for his department. Just days prior, three Passaic County correctional officers had been arrested by the FBI on federal charges related to the beating of a pretrial detainee. In the wake of these arrests, Berdnik had also informed his staff of impending layoffs for 29 correctional officers due to budget cuts and the closure of a jail. Those who knew him, including Paterson's mayor, who had seen him the day before, said nothing seemed out of the ordinary. The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
