Mary 'MJ' Jaylynn Rodriguez, a 21-year-old female, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2024, in Vineland, New Jersey. Her death was the result of a murder-suicide that occurred just days after she celebrated her 21st birthday. The incident took place at a residence on Roosevelt Boulevard, where Vineland police responded to a report of shots fired at approximately 6:03 p.m.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Rodriguez and a male, later identified as 22-year-old Juan Correa Santiago, both suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Both individuals were airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where they were pronounced dead. Investigators determined that Santiago, who was Rodriguez's ex-boyfriend, shot her before turning the gun on himself. The couple had been in an on-and-off relationship for about two years and shared a two-year-old son, who was found safe and is now in the care of relatives. Due to privacy regulations concerning domestic violence, the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office initially identified the deceased by their initials, 'M.R.' and 'J.C.S.,' though Rodriguez's family later publicly identified both her and Santiago.
Family members expressed that they had been worried about Santiago's potential for violence. Mary Rodriguez was remembered as a bright, ambitious, and kindhearted woman who was a loving mother. She was working as a medical assistant and had aspirations of becoming a registered nurse. Her vibrant spirit and enthusiasm for life were said to have touched the lives of many. A GoFundMe campaign was established to support her family and her young son.
