In a tragic turn of events on January 11, 2023, a Virginia Beach car crash escalated into a homicide investigation, claiming the life of 33-year-old Gregory James Smith Jr. of Newport News. The incident unfolded near the intersection of Spring and Featherstone Courts when the vehicle Smith was driving crashed into an apartment building. First responders, while attempting to render aid to Smith, discovered what appeared to be a gunshot wound, shifting the nature of the investigation.
As medical personnel worked to save him, a fire erupted from the vehicle, which subsequently spread to the apartment building, causing further damage. Despite the efforts of emergency crews, Gregory James Smith Jr. succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The official cause of his death was later determined by the Medical Examiner's Office. Friends and family remembered Smith as a peaceful and loving person, a father, and a philanthropist with his own clothing line.
The investigation into the homicide led to the apprehension of three suspects. Eighteen-year-old Naji Amir Johnson of Virginia Beach was arrested and faced a slew of charges, including felony murder, robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and motor vehicle theft. In addition to Johnson, two minors, a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old, were also taken into custody. The 17-year-old was charged with felony murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, while the 14-year-old faced charges of felony murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Due to their ages, the names of the two younger suspects were not publicly released.
