On the evening of February 12, 2023, the life of 20-year-old Tayvion Centrell Ajanique Williams of Norfolk, Virginia, was tragically cut short. Hampton Police responded to multiple calls of gunfire on St. George Way shortly before 7:40 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a scene that would soon become a homicide investigation.
According to the investigation conducted by the Hampton Police Division, Williams had been involved in an altercation with 19-year-old Michael Goffigan of Virginia Beach. The dispute escalated to a devastating point where both men reportedly drew firearms and exchanged gunfire. In the ensuing chaos, both Williams and Goffigan were struck by bullets.
Emergency services from the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the scene and transported Williams to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Goffigan had fled the scene before the arrival of law enforcement. He later admitted himself to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital to receive treatment for the injuries he sustained during the incident.
Following their investigation into the fatal shooting, the Hampton Police Division identified Michael Goffigan as the suspect. He was subsequently arrested and faced charges of second-degree murder, among other related offenses, in connection with the death of Tayvion Williams. Born in Newport News and raised in Virginia Beach, Williams was a graduate of Bethel High School in Hampton and had pursued further education at Tidewater Community College.
