In a quiet home on Wild Spruce Drive in Springfield, Virginia, a grim discovery was made on the afternoon of April 27, 2023. Amanuel Belachew Solomon, a 31-year-old man, was found deceased in the basement of the residence. Alongside him were the bodies of his 38-year-old sister, Meskerem Belachew Solomon, and her 47-year-old husband, Tiku Berhane Gebreeyesus.
All three had suffered gunshot wounds to the upper body.
The scene was discovered by the family's housekeeper who immediately alerted the authorities. When Fairfax County police arrived, they found the three individuals in the basement. A handgun was also recovered at the scene. The preliminary investigation by the Major Crimes Bureau led detectives to believe that the incident was a double murder-suicide. It is believed that Tiku Berhane Gebreeyesus shot and killed his wife, Meskerem, and her brother, Amanuel, before turning the weapon on himself. Amanuel and his sister had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, while Gebreeyesus had a single gunshot wound.
At the time of the tragic event, other members of the household were present but unharmed. The family's nanny and a two-year-old child were in the home at the time of the shootings. Two other children who resided in the home were at school. Investigators found no signs of forced entry, leading them to believe this was an isolated incident contained within the family. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was tasked with conducting autopsies to officially confirm the cause and manner of death for all three individuals. Detectives continued to investigate the circumstances that led to the fatal shootings. As the perpetrator was also deceased, there were no arrests to be made in connection with the deaths of Amanuel and Meskerem Belachew Solomon.
