In the winter of 2016, a tragic event unfolded in Springfield, Virginia, with the death of 22-year-old Henok G. Yohannes, a male of Ethiopian-American descent. On the evening of December 22nd, a family member discovered Yohannes's body inside his home on Blarney Stone Court. He had been fatally shot, sustaining trauma to his upper body which was later determined to be two gunshot wounds to the back of the head.
The initial investigation by Fairfax County police suggested that the killing was not a random act.
The case took a further grim turn when, the very next morning, the body of another 22-year-old, Kedest Sileshi Simeneh, was found in the backyard of a home in nearby Burke. She had also suffered trauma to her upper body, and her death was ruled a homicide. Investigators quickly determined that the two victims knew each other and that their murders were connected. The investigation revealed that the events leading to the deaths began with a drug deal at Yohannes's home. A dispute arose over payment for marijuana, during which Yohannes was shot and killed.
The primary suspect in both slayings was identified as Yohannes Nessibu. Authorities determined that after shooting Yohannes, Nessibu fled the scene with the same group of people, which included Simeneh. Later that night, he shot and killed her, leaving her body in the Burke backyard. The morning after the killings, Nessibu fled the United States, flying to his native Ethiopia. In March 2017, a grand jury indicted Nessibu on two counts of homicide and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
After a lengthy international process involving cooperation between U.S. and Ethiopian authorities, Nessibu was taken into custody in Ethiopia in February 2019 and extradited back to the United States in May of that year to face the charges. He stood trial for the two murders in separate proceedings. In August 2022, a jury convicted Nessibu of the first-degree murder of Kedest Simeneh. Subsequently, in March 2023, he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the death of Henok Yohannes. For his crimes, Yohannes Nessibu received a sentence of life in prison for the murder, an additional 10 years for manslaughter, and a further 8 years for the firearms charges.
