On a late Thursday evening in Norfolk, Virginia, tragedy unfolded at a 7-Eleven on West 26th Street, forever altering the lives of two families. Walter Eugene Painter, a 25-year-old male, was fatally wounded in a shooting that erupted inside the convenience store on May 11, 2023. Events began to spiral when Jalen Savion White-Kennedy, 25, entered the store accompanied by Painter.
An exchange occurred that escalated with shocking suddenness.
Inside the 7-Eleven, White-Kennedy and Painter encountered a store clerk whom they both recognized. In a swift and violent turn of events, White-Kennedy produced a firearm and opened fire on the 22-year-old employee. The clerk, also armed, took cover and returned fire. In the crossfire, both Painter and the clerk were struck by bullets. When police responded to the scene around 11:40 p.m., they discovered the wounded employee inside the store and Painter outside, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.
Both injured men were transported to a local hospital for medical attention. The clerk's injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening. Walter Eugene Painter, however, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. His official date of passing was recorded as May 12, 2023.
In the wake of the shooting, White-Kennedy fled the scene, but he was later identified by the clerk and other witnesses as the instigator of the deadly confrontation. The Norfolk Police Department apprehended him on July 6 of that year. At the time of the incident, White-Kennedy was already on probation for prior offenses. He ultimately pleaded guilty to malicious wounding, the use of a firearm in the commission of malicious wounding, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. For these crimes, he was sentenced to serve 12 years in prison. In addition to this new sentence, a judge revoked three years and ten months of previously suspended sentences from his prior convictions.
