On May 11, 2023, 25-year-old Walter Eugene Painter entered a 7-Eleven store at the intersection of 26th Street and Hampton Boulevard in Norfolk, Virginia, accompanied by 25-year-old Jalen Savion White-Kennedy. Inside the store, they recognized the clerk, which led to a confrontation. White-Kennedy drew a firearm and began shooting at the clerk, who took cover behind an aisle and returned fire.
