On the evening of June 22, 2023, the city of Danville, Virginia, was marked by a grim act of violence that claimed the life of 43-year-old Joe Arnold Martin, a Black/African American male. Martin was seated in a vehicle on the 1600 block of Washington Street when the tranquil evening was shattered by the sound of gunfire at approximately 8:15 p.m. Responding to the reports, Danville Police officers arrived at the scene to find Martin suffering from a critical gunshot wound.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts administered by the officers and his subsequent transport to SOVAH Health, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the homicide swiftly pointed to a suspect, Demetrius Agee Townes, a 35-year-old resident of Danville. Eyewitness accounts and surveillance footage from the area were pivotal in identifying Townes, who was seen exiting a residence on Washington Street before allegedly firing multiple shots at the vehicle Martin occupied. The evidence suggested a personal conflict between the two men, as it was revealed that Townes had earlier filed a police report alleging that Martin had taken his vehicle without permission. This prior dispute is believed to have been a potential motive for the fatal shooting.
Based on the evidence gathered, Demetrius Agee Townes was arrested and faced charges of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The Danville Police Department confirmed that they were not seeking any other suspects in connection with the case, bringing a swift, albeit somber, resolution to the city's fifth homicide of the year. In the wake of the tragedy, the police department organized a H.E.A.R.T. Walk on Washington Street the following day to engage with the community, offer support, and provide information to residents shaken by the incident.
