In the late afternoon of May 13, 2024, tragedy struck the community of Hopewell, Virginia, with the violent death of James Larrelle Thomas. A 40-year-old Black male, Thomas was affectionately known to friends and family by the nicknames 'Pope' or 'Relle'. The incident unfolded in the 1000 block of Edward Bland Court, where police officers were dispatched around 2:55 p.m. following a report of a shooting.
