In the afternoon hours of June 5, 2024, a sense of normalcy was shattered in a Roanoke, Virginia community. Isaac Ikier Cunningham, a 15-year-old male student at William Fleming High School, was walking home when his life was tragically cut short. Near the Ferncliff Apartments, he was shot and sustained serious injuries. First responders rushed him to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, but sadly, he succumbed to his wounds shortly after arriving.
In his final moments, Isaac was able to provide police with a crucial piece of information: the name of the person who shot him.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect, another 15-year-old male named Daydrian Martin, who was known to Isaac. Martin was taken into custody on the same evening as the shooting and transported to the Roanoke Police Department for questioning. He was initially charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. However, these charges were later upgraded to first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a murder. The case was ultimately transferred from the juvenile court system to be tried in adult court.
The motive behind the shooting appeared to stem from a prior altercation between the two teenagers. Months before the fatal encounter, a fight had occurred, which Isaac's mother described as an act of self-defense against bullying. Prosecutors presented text messages sent by Martin after this fight, in which he discussed retaliating with a firearm. During legal proceedings, it was revealed that Martin fired 24 shots at Isaac. Martin also admitted to being a member of a street gang at the time of the murder.
In April 2025, Daydrian Martin pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was subsequently sentenced to 40 years in prison with 15 years suspended, resulting in a 25-year active sentence. Following his release, he will be on probation for 10 years. Tragically, the cycle of gun violence would revisit the Cunningham family just over a year later when Isaac's father, Isaac 'Ike' Cunningham, was also shot and killed in a separate incident.
