For years, the fate of 54-year-old Darren Van Eaton, a male, remained a mystery after he disappeared in Phoenix, Arizona. It wasn't until a confession from an inmate in Washington state in early 2017 that the grim details of his death began to surface. The investigation that followed unraveled a story of homicide and financial deception, leading to the arrests of three individuals.
The case broke open when Craig Michael Strong, then 22 years old, admitted to being present during Van Eaton's murder in December 2014 while he was incarcerated in a Whatcom County jail on unrelated charges. Strong's confession led Phoenix police to a dirt lot behind a CVS Pharmacy, where they unearthed Van Eaton's remains in May 2017. Before his death, Van Eaton had been living in Phoenix, having moved from Washington state.
While the homicide investigation was unfolding, a parallel inquiry into financial fraud was also taking place. Authorities discovered that a married couple, George and Teniqua Reed, had been systematically stealing Van Eaton's Social Security benefits for years after his death. The couple, who lived near where Van Eaton's body was discovered, had illegally accessed his bank account, withdrawing his monthly deposits.
Following the discovery of Van Eaton's body and the unraveling of the financial fraud, all three individuals were taken into custody. Craig Michael Strong was slated for extradition to Arizona to face charges related to the homicide. Teniqua Reed was arrested on charges of fraud and theft for her role in stealing the Social Security benefits. Her husband, George Reed, who was already in jail on separate drug charges, was also implicated in the fraudulent scheme.
