On January 8, 2023, in Florence, South Carolina, 30-year-old Tony Michael "Mike" Smoot was found deceased from apparent gunshot wounds in the 600 block of Brunson Street. Officers had initially responded to a cardiac arrest call but discovered Smoot's body upon arrival. The Florence Police Department and the Florence County Coroner's Office promptly initiated a homicide investigation.
