On February 6, 2023, 76-year-old Lonnie Alford Ray, a resident of Lamar, South Carolina, was fatally shot during an attempted sale of a French Bulldog. Ray, a Vietnam War veteran and well-known dog breeder, had arranged to meet a prospective buyer through Facebook Marketplace in the parking lot of a KFC restaurant on Sumter Highway in Bishopville. Accompanied by a friend, Ray intended to finalize the transaction when the situation turned violent.
