On a September evening in Bishopville, South Carolina, the life of 18-year-old Zaki Lovely was tragically cut short. On September 9, 2020, while standing in his own yard on Law Street, the young Black male was fatally shot. The sudden eruption of violence left a community in shock and a family grappling with a profound loss.
According to witness accounts, two unidentified Black male suspects approached Zaki, fired multiple shots, and then fled the scene on foot, disappearing into the
neighborhood. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, leaving more questions than answers in the wake of the tragedy. First responders arrived at the scene, but Zaki succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
In the days and months that followed, the Bishopville Police Department, along with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division launched an investigation into the homicide. Despite their efforts, the individuals responsible for Zaki Lovely’s death have not been apprehended. Investigators have made public appeals for assistance, urging anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it might seem, to come forward. They believe that people within the community may hold the key to solving the case but might be hesitant to speak up due to fear of reprisal.
