A quiet Sunday afternoon in Sumter, South Carolina, turned tragic, leaving a family devastated and a community in shock. Fourteen-year-old Jacob Russ, a male student at Sumter High School, was fatally shot on February 12, 2023, at a McDonald's on North Lafayette Drive. The incident, which cut short a young life, stemmed from a workplace dispute that escalated into deadly violence.
Jacob was not directly involved in the initial conflict but was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
Jacob had accompanied family members to the McDonald's to pick up a relative who worked there. An altercation broke out inside the restaurant between an employee, 25-year-old Marcques Charles Wright Jr., and another employee who was Jacob's relative. As a family member attempted to intervene and de-escalate the fight, Wright allegedly pulled out a gun and began shooting. In the ensuing chaos, Jacob was struck by gunfire and died at the scene.
Following the shooting, Marcques Charles Wright Jr. fled the scene but was later apprehended by the Sumter Police Department without incident. He was taken into custody and transported to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center. Wright is facing a series of serious charges, including murder, two counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and unlawful carrying of a pistol. The community mourned the senseless loss of a young life, with counseling services being offered at Sumter High School to support students and staff affected by the tragedy. An autopsy for Jacob was scheduled to be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston as the investigation into the fatal shooting continued.
