Rashard Sharquavious Wright, an 18-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on July 8, 2023, at the Culpepper Landing Apartments. Wright, a recent graduate of James F. Byrnes High School, was a celebrated football player with a bright future; he was preparing to attend Benedict College on both an athletic and academic scholarship.
His death sent ripples of grief through the local community, where he was remembered for his passion for football and his love for his family.
The incident prompted an investigation by the Duncan Police Department, which quickly led to a suspect. Kirk Sterling McGowan, 20 years old at the time, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Authorities alleged that McGowan shot Wright in the left shoulder, causing the injury that led to his death. Following his arrest, McGowan was charged with murder.
