In the early morning hours of August 6, 2023, the life of 26-year-old Mallory Kourtlyn Nelson was tragically cut short in Columbia, South Carolina. Nelson, a Black male, was fatally shot around 4:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Zimalcrest Drive, near the area known as Malfunction Junction where Interstates 20 and 26 converge. The Columbia Police Department responded to the scene and collected ballistic evidence, describing the shooting as an isolated incident.
The Richland County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Nelson's death was a homicide resulting from the shooting.
Affectionately known as “Mal,” “Lil Mal,” or “Miles” to his friends and family, Mallory was remembered as a loving father, son, and brother. Described as soft-spoken with a cool demeanor, he was known for being pleasant, polite, and non-confrontational, and could make a friend of anyone. He had attended Swansea High School and later graduated from the South Carolina Youth Academy in 2013, and also attended Midlands Technical College. He was a fan of the Chicago Bulls and enjoyed watching cartoons like Naruto and Dragon Ball Z. Most of all, he enjoyed a carefree life and spending time with his friends.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects.
