The life of Ronnie Demone Crawford III came to a tragic and sudden end on August 13, 2023, in the town of Allendale, South Carolina. A Black / African American male, Crawford was a known figure in his community, having attended schools in Hampton and Orangeburg counties before earning a welding certificate. He was a man of many trades, working as a tattoo artist, barber, and landscape technician, and was a father to a young son.
On that fateful Sunday, Crawford was found suffering from gunshot wounds at the intersection of Bluff Road and Sam Street. Despite the immediate response of law enforcement and emergency services, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving family including his wife and parents.
The investigation into Crawford's death quickly identified a suspect, leading to a multi-state manhunt that stretched for nearly two months. The Allendale Police Department issued warrants for 34-year-old Johnathan Torell Kelly, charging him with murder, kidnapping, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Authorities indicated that Kelly was considered armed and dangerous, prompting the involvement of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and federal agencies. The search for Kelly intensified when leads pointed investigators toward the Midwest.
In early October 2023, the pursuit reached its conclusion hundreds of miles away from the crime scene. Law enforcement officers in Lawrence County, Illinois, first apprehended an associate of the suspect, Evan Cave, following a traffic stop and a subsequent tip from Allendale authorities. Cave was charged with assisting a fugitive, having allegedly driven Kelly in an attempt to help him evade capture. This arrest provided critical information that narrowed the search for the primary suspect to neighboring Indiana.
On the night of October 6, 2023, the U.S. Marshals Task Force, working alongside local deputies and police, located Johnathan Torell Kelly at a residence in Evansville, Indiana. The Evansville Police Department’s SWAT team surrounded the home on Pollack Avenue, and shortly after 10:00 p.m., Kelly surrendered without incident. He was taken into custody and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail to await extradition back to South Carolina to face the charges related to Crawford's killing.
