The investigation into Mia’s death quickly led authorities to identify two suspects: Tamika Suewanna Carter, a 47-year-old former Hampton County sheriff's deputy, and 43-year-old Marvis Jermaine Williams. In the aftermath of the shooting, Carter, who had been employed as a school resource officer, resigned from her position and surrendered to law enforcement. Williams, however, remained at large. Both Carter and Williams were charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Her life was celebrated by her family and friends, who were left to mourn the sudden and violent loss of a woman who meant so much to them. The community was left seeking answers and justice for a life taken too soon. As of the latest available reports, Marvis Jermaine Williams was still being sought by law enforcement.
