In a heartbreaking incident in Belton, South Carolina, three-month-old Zaila Godis Murray lost her life in a murder-suicide on December 21, 2023. The tragedy unfolded during a supervised visit with her father, 21-year-old Iziah Akeem Murray, at a residence on Cherokee Road.
The preliminary investigation revealed that at the conclusion of the visitation, Iziah Murray produced a handgun and fatally shot his infant daughter before turning the weapon on himself.
Both Zaila and her father were pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. The Anderson County Coroner's Office has officially ruled the case a homicide-suicide.
Authorities responded to a 911 call around 4:15 p.m. and found the father and daughter in the road with gunshot wounds. Zaila's mother, Shakira Fowler, was present at the scene and witnessed the horrific event. According to the coroner, after shooting the baby, Murray pointed the gun at the mother but did not fire before taking his own life. A family member of Iziah Murray was also reportedly in his car at the time of the incident. The investigation into the motive behind this tragic event is ongoing by the Anderson County Sheriff's Office and the Coroner's Office.
