On a late winter evening on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, the life of 38-year-old Elijah Maurice Jones, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On February 16, 2024, Charleston County Sheriff's deputies were called to the 6200 block of Maybank Highway around 10 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jones with a gunshot wound.
Despite any efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a prior altercation had taken place between Jones and another man, identified as 34-year-old David Matthew Legare. Witnesses reported that after the initial physical fight was broken up by others, Legare left the area. However, he returned about 30 minutes later, at which point the fatal shooting occurred. Jones was a resident of North Charleston.
In the days that followed, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office continued their investigation, which led them to identify Legare as the suspect. On February 23, 2024, David Matthew Legare was arrested and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Following his arrest, Legare was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center. Family and friends gathered to celebrate the life of Elijah Maurice Jones on February 24, 2024, at the New St. James Bethel AME Church on Wadmalaw Island, and he was laid to rest at the New Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.
