In the early morning hours of June 8, 2024, a tragic event unfolded in Graniteville, South Carolina, that ended the life of 23-year-old Richard Drek Carroll Jr. Known to his friends and family as 'Drek,' Carroll was a young man from Aiken.
Emergency services were first alerted to the incident when a man, later identified as Carroll, was brought to the emergency room of Wellstar MCG Health in Augusta with a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Carroll was pronounced dead at 2:32 a.m.
The Aiken County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the shooting. Initial information led them to the intersection of Sage Creek Boulevard and Bettis Academy Road in Graniteville. However, as the investigation progressed, authorities determined that the actual location of the shooting was a residence in the 8100 block of Red Rock Way.
The investigation, a collaborative effort involving the Aiken County Coroner's Office, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, and the Augusta University Police Department, led to the identification of a suspect. On a Thursday afternoon, investigators arrested 22-year-old Christion Alexander Reeves in connection with the fatal shooting. Reeves was subsequently taken to the Aiken County Detention Center. He faces charges of Murder and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. While an arrest has been made, a motive for the shooting has not yet been publicly disclosed. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
