In the early morning hours of June 12, 2024, Steven W. Hughes, a 46-year-old man from Lexington, South Carolina, was shot and killed in southeast Columbia. He was working for a towing company, carrying out a vehicle repossession on Fairmont Road when the fatal incident occurred. A Richland County sheriff's deputy discovered the tow truck with its flashers on and the driver's side door open.
The door had been shot multiple times.
The investigation into Hughes' death led to the arrest of Raheem Deangelo Jackson, 20, and his sister, Essence Jackson. Both were charged with murder in connection with the shooting. According to the Richland County Sheriff's Department, the shooting was a result of the vehicle repossession Hughes was performing. Raheem Jackson was also charged with possession of a firearm during a violent crime and was booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
