JoKayne Carter, a 19-year-old Black male from Columbia, South Carolina, was shot and killed on August 22, 2025, at The Roost apartments, 1051 Southern Drive, just off Bluff Road. Deputies were called shortly after 12:30 p.m. and found him with a gunshot wound to the upper body; he was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. Two days later, the Richland County Coroner publicly identified him and confirmed the manner of death as a homicide.
