In the summer of 2025, the life of 19-year-old JoKayne Carter was tragically cut short in Columbia, South Carolina. On the afternoon of Friday, August 22nd, deputies from the Richland County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of a shooting at The Roost apartment complex on Southern Drive. Upon their arrival, they discovered Carter in the road with a gunshot wound to his upper body.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators soon identified a gold Chevrolet Tahoe as the suspect vehicle. Witnesses reported that Carter had been pushed out of this vehicle before it sped away. The investigation quickly led to the identification of two suspects: 19-year-old Tyron Shelley and 20-year-old Ta'John Goodwin.
Within a day of the fatal shooting, arrests were made. Tyron Shelley was apprehended at his home in the Earlewood neighborhood of Columbia. A search of his residence also uncovered a stolen gun. Shortly thereafter, Ta'John Goodwin, accompanied by his family, turned himself in to the authorities at the sheriff's department headquarters. Both Shelley and Goodwin were subsequently charged with the murder of JoKayne Carter and were held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. While the apartment complex where the shooting occurred is marketed toward students of the nearby University of South Carolina, Allen University, and Benedict College, it was confirmed that neither the victim nor the suspects were affiliated with the university. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
