In the early morning hours of a Sunday in Cheraw, South Carolina, a young Black/African American woman's life was tragically cut short. Twenty-three-year-old SaDaijah Lex'Avia Pittman, a female resident of Cheraw, was at a hotel located in the 200 block of Front Street in the downtown area on August 18, 2024, when an argument erupted. The dispute took place at the restaurant of the Springhill Suites hotel.
The verbal altercation was between Pittman and another individual.
As the argument escalated, Pittman reportedly decided to disengage and began to walk away. It was at that moment that the situation turned deadly. The person she had been arguing with allegedly produced a weapon and shot her. The Cheraw Police Department and the State Law Enforcement Division were called to the scene to investigate the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting. The Chesterfield County Coroner's office confirmed Pittman's death and scheduled an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of her death.
In connection with the shooting, authorities arrested 18-year-old Ty'reek Guinyard. He has since been charged with murder. The investigation into the incident continues as the community grapples with the violent and sudden loss of a young life. The tragic event has raised concerns within the community about gun violence and the resolution of conflicts among young people.
