In the quiet town of Cheraw, South Carolina, the life of 13-year-old Jazyia Buchanan was tragically cut short in the early morning hours of July 26, 2022. A Black female, Jazyia was at her home on Cleveland Street when the residence was riddled with more than 15 bullets. She was struck and killed while playing a game on her computer, an innocent victim in a conflict that had been escalating between two families.
The senseless act of violence that claimed Jazyia's life was reportedly the
culmination of a feud that had been intensifying through social media. Authorities believe the Buchanan residence was specifically targeted as a result of this ongoing dispute. In the wake of the shooting, the community was left reeling, and Jazyia's parents remembered their daughter as a 'sweet, smart, outgoing child' who was full of life and cherished spending time with her family.
Within 15 hours of the fatal shooting, the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, made swift arrests.
