In the early morning hours of July 12, 2020, the life of 22-year-old Quanecia Brown was tragically cut short in a wave of violence that erupted at the Dizzy Gillespie Apartments in Cheraw, South Carolina. The incident, which also claimed the life of a young man and injured Brown's infant child, stemmed from an earlier altercation at a club in nearby Marlboro County.
The chain of events began with a dispute involving Christopher Charles Green.
After leaving the club, Green returned to Cheraw, accompanied by several other individuals. Back at the Dizzy Gillespie Apartments, a confrontation ensued. Green, armed with an assault-style rifle, fired at a vehicle, killing 23-year-old Kwondashian Johnson who was sitting in the passenger seat.
In the ensuing chaos, another man, Raekwon Ellerbe, brandished a handgun and fired multiple shots in the direction of the apartment where Quanecia Brown and her 6-month-old child were inside. Both Brown and her baby were struck by the gunfire. Brown was rushed to a local hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Her child was also hospitalized but fortunately survived.
The investigation led to the arrest of several individuals. Christopher Charles Green was charged with murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and discharging a firearm into a vehicle. Raekwon Ellerbe was also taken into custody. Additionally, Green's father, Christopher Wendell Green, and his brother, Marcus Anthony Smith, were charged with accessory after the fact of murder and tampering with evidence for attempting to hide the firearms used in the shootings.
