In the late summer evening of September 4, 2024, the life of 18-year-old Jelani Amir Jackson, a Black male, was tragically cut short on a street in Lancaster, South Carolina. Jackson, a recent high school student described by his aunt as well-loved and kind, was walking on Clinton Avenue near Ruth Street when gunshots rang out just before 8 p.m. Responding officers discovered Jackson with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to MUSC-Lancaster Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries. Neighbors reported hearing what at first sounded like firecrackers, only to realize the grim reality of the situation as Jackson fell into a nearby yard.
The investigation into the death of Jelani Jackson quickly became a top priority for the Lancaster Police Department, who believed the shooting might be connected to a string of retaliatory, gang-related violence that plagued the area. Within a week of the shooting, the first suspect, 19-year-old Kenyan Blair, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Blair was already in custody at the Lancaster County jail on unrelated charges when he was served with the arrest warrant for Jackson's death.
The search for others involved continued, and later that month, authorities announced they were looking for a second suspect, 31-year-old Lamonta Dishanior Roberts, who was considered armed and dangerous. Roberts was apprehended on November 20, 2024, in Richland County. He faced charges of murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The investigation, a collaborative effort involving local, state, and federal agencies including the FBI and ATF, pressed on.
By March of the following year, the case saw further developments with the arrest of two more individuals. These suspects, whose identities were not disclosed because they were juveniles, were also charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. This brought the total number of individuals arrested in connection with Jelani Jackson's death to four. The investigation remains active and ongoing as law enforcement continues to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
