On September 19, 2024, the life of 23-year-old Nigel Malik Smith, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short on Georgia Acres Road in his hometown of Gray Court, South Carolina. The Laurens County Coroner's Office confirmed that Smith died from a fatal gunshot wound, marking a grim day for the community. The incident prompted an immediate and active investigation by the Laurens County Sheriff's Office.
In the wake of the shooting, authorities quickly identified a primary
suspect: 17-year-old Kamarius Lee Cunningham. The Laurens County Sheriff's Office issued a warrant for his arrest, seeking him on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. A search for the teenage suspect was initiated, with law enforcement appealing to the public for any information regarding his whereabouts. They assured the community that the shooting was an isolated incident and there was no broader danger to the public.
Following the public appeal and the efforts of law enforcement, Kamarius Lee Cunningham was successfully located and taken into custody. The community was left to mourn the loss of Nigel Smith, a young man remembered by his loving parents, siblings, grandmother, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. His family held a celebration of his life on September 26, 2024, and he was laid to rest in the Orchard Park Memorial Gardens cemetery.
