On a tragic day in Jackson, Mississippi, a young man's life was cut short in a brazen act of violence. Steven Nichols, a 31-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on January 11, 2023, at an Exxon gas station located on Interstate 55 North. He and another man, 32-year-old Christopher Oliver, were sitting inside a white pickup truck when they were ambushed by multiple assailants who unleashed a hail of gunfire upon them.
Both Nichols and Oliver sustained life-threatening injuries from the
numerous gunshots and were rushed to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Nichols succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital. Oliver fought for his life for three more days before he too passed away from his injuries on January 14, 2023. The Jackson Police Department began an immediate investigation into the double homicide.
In the wake of the devastating loss, Steven Nichols was remembered as a devoted father, brother, and friend. A graduate of Jim Hill High School, he had continued his education at Hinds Community College where he studied welding. He later worked as a pharmacy technician before embracing his entrepreneurial spirit and starting his own vehicle service business, 'Pitt-Stop,' which he had successfully operated for over three years.
As the investigation progressed, law enforcement officials stated that they believed the shooting was a targeted attack. However, the suspects remained at large, and as of the latest available information, no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of Steven Nichols and Christopher Oliver. The Jackson Police Department has continued to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for this senseless act of violence. The case remains an active investigation.
