In the spring of 2023, the life of 20-year-old Brandon Shaffer Jr., a Black/African American male from Greenwood, Mississippi, was tragically cut short. On the evening of May 31st, what should have been an ordinary day ended in a burst of violence that claimed two lives and left another individual fighting for his. Shaffer was in front of Scott Petroleum, at the busy intersection of U.S. 82 and Mississippi 7, when a drive-by shooting erupted. The attack, described by Greenwood Police Chief Terrence Craft as targeted, also killed 45-year-old Dewanna McClee and left her 24-year-old son, Tamarkus Martin, in critical condition.

The brazen nature of the shooting sent ripples of shock and grief through the Greenwood community. It was a senseless act that not only took away a young man at the beginning of his adult life but also a mother, leaving families devastated and a community searching for answers. The randomness and brutality of the crime highlighted the persistent issue of gun violence and its devastating impact on families and the sense of safety in the community. Friends and family of Brandon Shaffer Jr. were left to mourn a life that was full of potential, now extinguished.

In the wake of the tragedy, law enforcement launched an intensive investigation to bring those responsible to justice. Their efforts led to the apprehension of two suspects. Christopher McNelson, 24, and Cordarius Arterberry, 26, were arrested and subsequently charged in connection with the murders of Brandon Shaffer Jr. and Dewanna McClee. The arrests brought a measure of relief to a community on edge, signaling a step towards accountability for the violence that had shaken them.

As of late 2024, both McNelson and Arterberry remained in custody, awaiting trial for their alleged roles in the fatal drive-by shooting. While the legal process has experienced delays, the community continues to hold out hope for justice for the victims. The case serves as a somber reminder of the lives altered and lost, and the long road to healing for the families of Brandon Shaffer Jr. and Dewanna McClee.
