In the early morning hours of July 20, 2023, a residence in the 500 block of West Adams Street in Kosciusko, Mississippi, became the scene of a fatal shooting. Jamel Davis, a 21-year-old Black male, was shot and subsequently transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Attala for his injuries. Tragically, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Kosciusko Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting and quickly identified a suspect. Jarmarion Thompson, a 17-year-old from Kosciusko, was named in connection with the death of Davis. More than a month after the incident, on August 31, 2023, Thompson was extradited from Memphis, Tennessee, back to Kosciusko to face legal action. He was formally charged with murder for his alleged role in the shooting.
Despite being a teenager at the time of the offense, the decision was made to try Jarmarion Thompson as an adult. His murder trial commenced on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. The proceedings concluded the following day, on September 11, 2024, with a jury finding Thompson, by then 18 years old, guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Jamel Davis. His sentencing was scheduled to take place on Monday, September 16, 2024.
