In the quiet community of Vancleave, Mississippi, a Sunday afternoon turned tragic, leaving a family shattered by violence. On September 3, 2023, Douglas Joseph Arguelles, a 60-year-old White male, was found severely injured inside his home on Waltman Road. Before being rushed to the hospital, he identified his stepson as the person who had attacked him.
Despite medical efforts, Arguelles succumbed to his injuries and died later that day.
The alleged assailant, Aaron Blake Haylock, who was 30 years old at the time, fled the scene in his stepfather's truck. This initiated a manhunt by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, who considered Haylock armed and dangerous. The stolen truck was later discovered abandoned in Vancleave, intensifying the search for the suspect. The following day, law enforcement located and arrested Haylock without incident at Martin Luther King Park on Highway 57.
Following his arrest, Aaron Blake Haylock was charged with capital murder in connection with the death of his stepfather. During his initial court appearance, a judge ordered that Haylock undergo a mental evaluation before a bond would be considered. He was subsequently jailed at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center.
