In the early hours of a winter weekend in Grenada, Mississippi, the life of 36-year-old Charles Santez Coffey, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On Saturday, January 27, 2024, at approximately 2:30 a.m., law enforcement responded to a call in the 800 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. There, they discovered Coffey deceased outside a residence, the victim of a fatal shooting. The Grenada County Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.
The shooting that claimed Coffey's life was not an isolated incident but rather the first in a string of violent shootings that shook the Grenada community over a two-day period. In the hours that followed, three other individuals, including an adult female, a 24-year-old male, and a nine-year-old girl, were also wounded in separate but related shootings. Investigators believed that fully automatic weapons were used in these attacks, creating a climate of fear and urgency for law enforcement to find those responsible.
For several months, the investigation into Coffey's murder continued, leaving the community seeking answers. Then, on July 19, 2024, a breakthrough came when authorities arrested 38-year-old Jameson Terrell Hayes in the neighboring Panola County. Hayes was subsequently charged with the murder of Charles Santez Coffey. His arrest brought a sense of relief to a community that had been on edge since the violent weekend in January.
