In the early morning hours of January 30, 2024, the community of Brandon, Mississippi, was disturbed by the sound of multiple gunshots. Responding to the calls, Brandon Police Department officers arrived at the area near Mary Myles Drive and Mary Crain Circle around 1:50 a.m. to uncover a tragic scene. Two 18-year-old males, JaMarques Patterson and Montrell Briggs, were found deceased, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Patterson, an African American male, and Briggs were discovered near a vehicle; one of the young men was inside the car, while the other was found outside.
The investigation into the double homicide moved quickly, and by later that same morning, authorities had a juvenile suspect in custody. Due to the suspect's age, their identity has not been publicly released. The juvenile is facing serious charges, including two counts of murder, felony aggravated assault, and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
While an arrest has been made, the motive behind the deadly shooting has not been disclosed by law enforcement officials. The Brandon Police Department, along with other agencies such as the Rankin County District Attorney's Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations Crime Scene Unit, have been involved in the ongoing investigation.
