In the chaotic aftermath of a high school homecoming football game celebration, Martel Gibson, a 25-year-old male, was fatally shot. The incident occurred in the early morning hours on a Saturday in Holmes County, Mississippi, on Highway 17 North, just outside of Lexington. A large gathering of approximately 200 to 300 people had convened for a trail ride to celebrate the local high school's victory when a dispute escalated into gunfire.
