In the spring of 2023, a dispute over a bicycle on Detroit's east side tragically escalated, leading to the death of 13-year-old Craig Patterson. The young male was fatally shot on March 16th on Frankfort Street in an incident that also left his older brother wounded.
Surveillance footage from the neighborhood would later piece together the moments leading up to the shooting.
The video evidence, which was presented during a preliminary court examination, showed two individuals, identified as Christian Malon and Tashawn McDowell, approaching the Patterson brothers. Words were exchanged, stemming from a disagreement over a bicycle between Craig's brother and one of the suspects. Without warning, a gun was produced and fired. The footage captured the suspects fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. Craig Patterson did not survive his injuries.
Following an investigation that relied heavily on the string of doorbell and security camera videos, Detroit homicide detectives were able to identify and apprehend two suspects. Christian Malon and Tashawn McDowell were subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting. McDowell has been charged with the murder of Craig Patterson. The case against both individuals is proceeding through the court system.
