In the early morning hours of June 17, 2023, the life of 28-year-old Arely Mejia-Hernandez was tragically cut short in Battle Creek, Michigan. A Hispanic female, she was discovered fatally shot inside her vehicle, which was found in the tree line at the edge of Riverside Park. Officers in the vicinity were drawn to the scene after hearing the sound of gunshots around 1:20 a.m.
Despite the immediate arrival of medical assistance, Mejia-Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into her death quickly led authorities to identify 31-year-old Tramayne Brown as a suspect. Evidence uncovered a deeply troubled and manipulative relationship between the two, with investigators finding over 400 Snapchat messages that pointed to a history of domestic violence. This was not the first violent encounter between them. Just two months prior, in April 2023, Brown had allegedly kidnapped Mejia-Hernandez during her work break. That incident concluded with her rescue from a wooded area and Brown fleeing, which resulted in an outstanding warrant for his arrest at the time of her murder.
Following the fatal shooting in June, Brown once again attempted to evade law enforcement by fleeing the state. His attempt to hide came to an end approximately a week later when he was apprehended in Georgia. After his capture, Brown was extradited back to Michigan to face the consequences of his actions. He was subsequently charged with murder and kidnapping in connection with the death of Arely Mejia-Hernandez. Brown's criminal history revealed a pattern of violence, with prior convictions for domestic violence and home invasion dating back to when he was sixteen years old. He remains in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings for the death of Arely Mejia-Hernandez.
