In the early hours of July 2, 2023, the community of Flint, Michigan, was shaken by the tragic death of 27-year-old Monecia La'Tanzane Hunter, a Black/African American woman who was fatally shot in her home. Born on New Year's Eve in 1995, Monecia was known to her loved ones as a gentle spirit with a heart of gold. She was the eldest of three children born to India Hunter-Walker and had built a life in Flint, graduating from Flint Beecher High School in 2014.
Her proudest accomplishment came in 2021 when she became a mother to her son, Jasai Benton. Friends and family remembered her for her warm smile, her patience, and her love for music, dancing, and travel.
The incident unfolded at approximately 12:30 a.m. when the Flint Police Department received calls reporting a shooting in the 800 block of Chatham Drive. Upon arriving at the residence, officers discovered Monecia suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the emergency response, she succumbed to her injuries, marking another painful loss for the city. Following her death, a funeral service was held on July 17, 2023, at the Spirit of Victory Outreach Ministries, where family and friends gathered to celebrate her life and mourn her untimely passing.

The Flint Police Department had not released specific details regarding a motive or the identity of any potential suspects involved in the homicide. Detective Sergeant Terrence Walker was assigned to lead the inquiry, with police urging anyone in the public with information to come forward to assist in solving the case.
